Selecting the Right Material for Your Project
Material choice is the most important decision in sign printing. The wrong substrate means premature failure, wasted budget, and a poor reflection on your brand. Here is a practical guide. Corrugated plastic is the standard for temporary to medium-term outdoor signage: real estate signs, political campaign signs, construction site signs, and event directional signs. It is lightweight, waterproof, and cost-effective. Typical outdoor lifespan is 6 to 18 months. Aluminum composite is the choice for permanent or long-term installations: storefront signs, parking lot signs, building directories, and any sign that needs to look professional for years. It is rigid, rust-resistant, and maintains its appearance in all weather conditions. PVC board provides a smooth, professional surface for indoor signage and sheltered outdoor applications: trade show displays, wall-mounted signs, retail signage, and temporary architectural graphics. It is lighter than aluminum and easy to mount. Vinyl banners are the go-to for large-format promotional signage: building wraps, fence banners, trade show backdrops, and grand opening displays. Reinforced hems and grommets ensure secure mounting even in windy conditions.
Artwork Guidelines for Large-Format Signs
Large signs have different artwork requirements than standard printing. Resolution requirements decrease as sign size increases because viewing distance increases proportionally. For signs under 24 inches, use 300 DPI at full size. For signs and banners between 2 and 6 feet, 150 DPI at full size is sufficient. For very large banners over 8 feet, 100 DPI is acceptable. Vector artwork (PDF, AI, EPS) is always preferred for sign printing because it scales to any size without quality loss. If you are working with raster files (PSD, TIFF, JPG), ensure they meet the minimum resolution for your sign size. Design for visibility. Signs are read from a distance, so use bold, high-contrast color combinations and large text. A general rule: text should be at least 1 inch tall for every 10 feet of viewing distance. Keep messaging concise — most signs should communicate their message in under 5 seconds of viewing time.
